Hoodie Allen, the self proclaimed "college educated music nerd" dropped this mix tape "Pep Rally" back in September. It caught my attention through Hype Machine with his Black Keys remix of 'Tighten Up.' Drawing from todays indie pop reemergence, Hoodie tends to sample some unusual sounds for Hip Hop on this mix tape. Everything from Death Cab for Cutie to Florence and the Machine. Hoodie Allen is not for the haters of mash ups/covers or light, humorous word play, jacked full of pop culture references (Definitely heavy on the pop culture references). Hoodie can be hit or miss on this mix tape though but most of it is hits for me (Tighten Up, Words of Wisdom, Your Not a Robot) ...but there are definitely a few misses (January Jones, Party at the Beach House.)
Originality is key these days and Hoodie has it.
